Crystal Palace supremo Steve Parish says someone will get seriously hurt unless the Holmesdale fanatics curb their behaviour.

The Eagles co-chairman banned two fans from Selhurst Park until the end of the season after what he called “downright dangerous” behaviour in the Holmesdale stand during the Arsenal defeat last month.

Despite a silent protest from the fanatics at the next home game, Parish justified the ban as essential to ensure the fanatics’ block is not closed down on safety grounds.

The Holmesdale fanatics have earned a reputation as Palace’s “ultras” as appearances on television have increased.

However, Parish is determined to reel in their over-zealous celebrations and “crowd-surfing” antics.

He said: “It’s unbelievable. We have footage where you can see the guy standing on his seat, three rows back.

“He jumps, and there are bodies just jumping in. All the seats under them are breaking so there are jagged bits of plastic and poles sticking up - it’s just downright dangerous.

Concern: Crystal Palace co-chairman Steve Parish fears someone will get seriously hurt if the Holmesdale fanatics do not reel in their behaviour

“There are people around it who have got nothing to do with it, and they might get a boot in the face.

“You can’t let that go on at a football match – the safety council will close the block.”

He added: “I am responsible. Imagine if I don’t do anything and I let them do that next week and the week after and something happens?

“The police and safety council will come to me and tell me to close the block.

“I’m responsible for their safety and keeping order in the stadium - we’ve given them [Holmesdale fanatics] guidelines about what we can defend and what we cannot defend, and what’s happened is outside of those guidelines by a mile.

“There is no way any other football ground in Britain would allow you to do what they did.”

In line with other improvements within the ground to bring it up to Premier League standard, Selhurst Park now has additional CCTV cameras with higher resolution and stewards wearing body cameras.

The cameras are watching the Holmesdale fanatics, leading to criticisms that the club is being over-zealous in its surveillance – especially after the two fans were banned.

Parish, who has had meetings with the fanatics to attempt to find a middle ground, said: “It’s not like Big Brother is watching you.

“Other grounds have probably got better systems, but our cameras are there to protect the group and target the people that are doing things wrong.

“We don’t want to tarnish the whole group. We want to address the problem.

“We tell the fans, all fans, give us everything you’ve got that’s good. Bring your flags, bring your drums, support the club, start the singing going – and it’s absolutely brilliant."

He added: “What those two fans did was dangerous and you can’t do it. You can’t do what you want in there and expect us to accept it until somebody gets badly hurt.

“We’re acting in their best interests, the club’s best interests and everybody’s best interests.”
