Scott Dann admitted he was disappointed after Crystal Palace surrendered late on to fall to a 3-1 defeat to West Ham on Saturday.

The Eagles conceded two goals in the final six minutes having spent the entire second half with ten men after Dwight Gayle was shown a red card just before half time.

And Dann, captain in place of substitute Mile Jedinak, was quick to highlight Palace were not at the races even before the sending off.

“We’re disappointed to lose it in the end but it was a tough game and I think even for the first 30 minutes when we had 11 men we weren’t in control of the game and they were probably the better team,” said Dann.

“It’s difficult enough against teams like West Ham with 11 men, never mind ten.

“We’re disappointed not only with the result but the way we played for the first 30 minutes.”

Dann felt that the Eagles were doing enough to limit their opponents’ man-advantage before West Ham eventually broke through Palace’s defiant backline.

“Once you go down to ten men you want to keep it nice and tight and see if you can nick it late in the game or hold on for a point,” he said.

“They had a lot of the ball but they were having shots from long distance and weren’t putting many crosses in so we were quite comfortable.”

Despite being a man down, Palace’s defence held out until the 88th minute when Dann failed to clear Andy Carroll’s knock down, leaving Manuel Lanzini to stab the ball in from close range.

“I ended up kicking it onto his shin,” the 28-year-old added.

“It was a bit unfortunate but you know, these things happen.

“For the third we’re all up the pitch and the game’s over by then.”

The defeat ended Palace’s three-match winning streak, and Dann suggested the international break interrupted their progress following a superb start to the season.

“When you’re in that kind of form, the way we played at home, you don’t want the international break to come,” he said.

“I don’t think it affected us in terms of training and preparation for the game because all the lads came back fit and well.

“They started the game really well today and we didn’t quite get up to the standards we set ourselves.

“We know we’ve got to do better in the next game.”
