Julian Speroni will equal the Crystal Palace all-time record for goalkeeper appearances against Southampton, Alan Pardew has confirmed.

The 36-year-old has only made one league appearance for the Eagles this season but is set to start at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Argentine will equal the club record for a goalkeeper by joining John Jackson on 388 appearances.

Pardew said: “Speroni will play. I want to play him because he equals the record in the game.

“On this occasion sentimentality has won. But he deserves it. He has been a fantastic backup to the other goalies.

“He has to break the record next, so let's wait until he breaks it.

“He could play into his 40s, because his conditioning and professionalism is such. You wouldn't doubt that.”

Palace travel to Southampton with their Premier League status secured after beating Stoke at Selhurst Park last week.
