Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare has suffered injuries to his thigh and jaw after a horror crash on the M4 yesterday.

The 26-year-old player was involved in a serious two-way collision between junction three and four at around 12.10pm.

He was airlifted to an east London hospital for treatment.

In a statement issued today, Crystal Palace Football Club confirmed that the Senegal international was injured in the crash.

They said: "The player has sustained injuries to his thigh and jaw bone and will remain in hospital whilst he receives treatment.

"The club are liaising closely with the hospital on his progress and we obviously wish him a speedy recovery.

"Our thoughts are with Pape and his family at this time."

The London Ambulance Service said a man in his 20s was taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Pictures on social media show the aftermath of the smash, after the roof of Souare's wrecked Mercedes Benz 4x4 was cut off by fire crews.

The driver of the other car involved did not require hospital treatment, and no arrests have been made.

Souare was absent from Saturday's 2-1 win against Middlesbrough after suffering an injury.

He last featured in the squad on August 27, when Palace took on Bournemouth at home for a 1-1 draw.

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or the events leading up to the collision, to contact them on 020 8543 5157."
