Jason Brown has dealt an early blow to Sutton United's pre-season plans ahead of the new National League South campaign.

The 33-year-old goalkeeping had returned to Gander Green Lane after a season with Dartford, and was one of boss Paul Doswell's key summer signings.

However, the Welsh international has decided to take up a coaching position at League One Gillingham.

Doswell said: "Jason called me last night and has been offered a great opportunity to become Gillingham's goalkeeping coach, and it's something where we have to understand his position and allow him to move on with good grace.

"It's far from ideal from my perspective as I thought we were all done, but I got onto the situation immediately last night and have made some calls."

He added: "We wish Jason all the best in his new role and I'm sure he will be down to support the club in the future."
