Everything about the performance against St Albans was perfect really, and the five goals scored were thoroughly deserved.

It was hard not to get excited on the terrace behind the goal as yellow shirts flooded forward for attack after attack, looking like scoring every time.

The fact that United kept pushing for more goals at 5-0 shows the professionalism in the squad at the moment – and this could of course be vital come the end of the season should we find ourselves level on points with anyone.

St Albans genuinely weren’t all that bad, but the way United played made them look a lot worse than they actually are.

However it is fair to say Curzon Ashton won’t allow themselves to be hit for five next week.

The Tameside club are performing well in a league at a much higher standard than where they have been playing throughout most of their history.

Their away form is slightly sketchy though – they have only won two of their 10 away games in the National League North, drawing five of them.

The stakes are high for both sides, with a place in the last 16 of the FA Trophy the reward for the winner.

Prize money is of course on offer, but the dream of Wembley is perhaps more significant at this stage.

Before this game however, Paul Doswell’s men face Corinthian-Casuals on Wednesday night in the Surrey Senior Cup, subject to the weather.

An opportunity to give a few fringe players and those returning from injury or suspension a bit of game time ahead of Saturday is likely to be a very welcome one.

With the Casuals having an army of former United players it should be a good occasion.
