Cheam Rangers U14 girls, have progressed to the final stages of the 2010 Tesco Cup football competition, following an impressive 3-1 County Cup win against Shelton Athletic Ladies, played at Chipstead FC Stadium.

The girls will now represent Surrey County FA at the Tesco Cup Southern England Regional Final, to take place at Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields, Putney, on Saturday 17 April.

Cheam got off to a perfect start with an early goal from Daniela Brown, five minutes into the game. Shelton equalised to make it 1-1 but second half goals from Kayley O’Neil and Amy Boylon meant that Cheam were victorious.

Cheam Rangers will now go on to play against nine teams from the Southern England Region in Putney on April 17, where they will compete for the one spot available at the English National Final, to be held at Pride Park, home to Derby County FC on Sunday 9 May. The National Champions will then represent England in the UK final, to be held at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton, on May 16.

Team Manager David Pullinger said: “What a great result. The girls have worked really hard this season and fully deserved to win. It was a fantastic squad effort with all players putting in a great display. They are thrilled to progress to the next stage of the competition and will be giving it all they’ve got at the Regional Final.”

The Tesco Cup, now in its fifth year, is part of a wider commitment from Tesco to encourage youngsters to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and get involved in sport. The home nation’s grassroots football competition is run in conjunction with the FA and local communities. This season, over 41 counties in the UK have entered the competition across the three age groups, U13 boys, U14 girls and U16 girls.

Teams from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales will compete at County and then Regional level (Area level in Wales) in a bid to become National Champions and ultimately, to represent their country at the UK Final.
