Carshalton-born boxer Tony Owen is back in the ring this weekend after admitting to a rethink over his career.

Owen has been out of action his defeat to Ricky Boylan for the Southern Area light-welterweight title in December, 2013.

Victory would have taken the 28-year-old to the brink of an English title challenge and he admitted it left him “deflated” and considering retirement.

But he has decided to get back in the ring and appears at the Camden Centre on Saturday against an as yet unknown opponent.

The 28 year-old said: “"I was gutted about what happened against Ricky.

“I was so deflated and started questioning myself.

“I had a lot going on anyway. I got married to Lucy, we bought a house together and I thought it would be good to enjoy everything that was happening without worrying about dieting and fighting. “I didn’t think I was going to box again.”

He added: “I thought I would be OK, but when I got back in the gym and started training again I got my enthusiasm back.

“I’m still hungry and I still have a lot to offer. I’m capable of pushing on and going further than before.”

Owen will have a new trainer in his corner on Saturday after teaming up with Adam Martin.

He said: “It’s a new start. We’ve been working on different things in the gym and I feel refreshed and ready to go.”
