Beddington boxer Sunny Edwards is edging closer to a shot at Olympic glory after a stunning sixth national title win in a row.
The 19-year-old beat Joe Maphosa on a unanimous points decision last weekend to claim the 49kg England Boxing Elite Championships crown.
Maphosa, who fights out of Middlesbrough BC, had a bye to the semi-final as reward for only just losing out to Cuban number one Joahnys Argilagos Perez two weeks ago.
Edwards had to overcome Razwan Hussein and Galal Yafai to reach his final destiny with Maphosa.
He said: “I won every round using my movement and picking shots from range, and when I did get close I outworked him which gave me every round.
“I’m now pushing for a place on the GB team as Joe was their number one and I’ve just beaten him.
“We’ll see where we go from there. The chance of a shot at the Olympics qualifiers is not a million miles away as Joe was the favourite for a place before we met.”
Meanwhile, South Norwood & Victory BC boxer Joshua Buatsi, pictured, beat Ashley Vanzie to win the 81kg title.
