The junior rods are in the capital this Sunday, with one young man in particular looking to shine under the Plough Lane lights.

Tyler Proudlock, 11, who is in his first season in the formula, is the young son of former hot rod world champion Shaun Proudlock, and is on a "fast track" to not only replicate his father’s achievements, but better them.

Dad Shaun, who started racing himself at aged just 12, was a star of Oval racing from the beginning, winning championships in his first two years in the junior minis and then the hot rods.

In his first season in the hot rods, he began with a hat-trick of wins on his debut meeting.

At just 17 years old, Shaun incredibly won the hot rod world championship, and still holds the record today for being the youngest to do so.

Just two years later, he retired at the top having then won the national championship, and become of all things the South African champion having won in Pretoria.

So young Tyler has some big boots to fill in following his father, but already he looks not only capable of matching his achievements, but exceeding them.

Tyler started racing at the age of just six years old in the mini sprint karts, and began winning races also from the off.

He was so successful that he left Oval racing for a while to garner further experience on circuits.

Incredibly, after again dominating the sport, two years later he returned to the Ovals, as circuit racing was not challenging enough.

Wandsworth Times:

Tyler Proudlock in action

In 2014, he drove in the ninja kart formula and continued his rise, winning many races and the end of year points championship. He was also voted "driver of the year" by his peers.

Having reached the age ceiling for ninja karts, at aged 11 Tyler "graduated" to the junior rods this year, and he has hit the ground running.

A series of wins at the Aldershot Raceway and Arlington Raceway during the season sees him sitting in fourth place in the year-long championship coming into Sunday’s final round.

So will young master Proudlock go one better than his father? Sunday will give us the answers.

With something for everything Oval racing fan, also on the bumper four formula card this Sunday, are stock rods, V8 stock cars and the relatively new class of "back to basic" bangers.

Racing starts at 5.30pm with turnstiles open at 4.30pm.
