Weybridge Vandals might have started their London Division Two South West campaign with a win on Saturday, but head coach Aidan Turns is not getting carried away.

Rugby chairman Wayne Mason rolled back the years to score his maiden first team tries with a brace in Saturday's 30-7 opening day win over Basingstoke, with further scores coming from skipper Cassian Bramham-Law and Harry Reed.

The win came with a good luck message from giant Fiji wing Nemani Nadolo, scorer of his country's only try in their 35-11 Rugby World Cup defeat to England on Friday.

Vandals enjoyed an impressive second half of the season last term and Turns was delighted to see his men carry that momentum into the new campaign.

But he insisted there remained plenty of work to be done in preparation for tougher challenges to come.

"It wasn't the most polished performance, but it was the right result on paper, so we are happy," said Turns.

"We were more ambitious with the ball in hand than I have seen us and we had more of an attacking threat, but we committed far too many basic errors and penalties.

"We scored three tries in the last seven minutes to get the bonus point and seal the game, which is a sign the hard work we have put in on our fitness is paying off.

"But you cannot read too much into the win because I believe Basingstoke will be one of the weakest teams in the the league and I expect a long, hard season."

Vandals head to Old Alleynians on Saturday.
