Esher backs coach Craig Chalmers wants a run of three straight bonus point victories to re-ignite his side’s National Division One title charge.

Rosslyn Park, who led 21-8 at half time, went top of the pile on Saturday as they resisted an impressive Esher fightback – featuring tries from Ashley Smith and David Millard – to hold on for a 38-31 triumph at the Rock.

The Molesey Road men, who lost to fellow title rivals Doncaster Knights last week, slipped to fourth in the table ahead of this weekend’s visit from third-placed Coventry.

And backs mastermind Chalmers knows his team must get on a winning streak to keep pace in the promotion race.

“We are going to get back on the horse and there’s no reason why we can’t put a performance together at home,” said the coach, pictured right.

“Though we may not have deserved to win our last two games we have shown we can compete with the top sides away from home and that we are a top side ourselves.

“Coventry have good players and though they don’t like travelling they will be up for it as a one-off game, records won’t matter.

“They have got players like Barry Davies – who has played at the highest level for Scarlets and Ospreys – who will be a big threat.

“So it will be a very hard game. I’ve played Coventry on a number of occasions with Worcester and they are a tough nut to crack.

“We’re hoping Rosslyn Park can beat Doncaster, and then if we beat Coventry we can start to get it all back together again.

“We’re playing the bottom two after that, so we’ve got to get 15 points from the next three games to stay in the hunt. If we can we will be right in with a shout.”

Winger Anders Mogensen’s try was the highlight of a poor first half from Esher on Saturday and – despite the fight back – Chalmers knows his side cannot afford another slow start.

“First half we were poor, going too high in the tackle and conceding really soft tries. We gave them 21 points very easily,” he added.

“There was lots of inaccuracy and space in defence, letting them in areas they should never have got into. It was a brave second-half display, but to be in the position we were in is tough to take.

“There’s been two away games we should and could have won now – we should have learned from the Doncaster game, but we didn’t.

“We talked about it, but did not correct our mistakes.

“It’s not for the lack of effort, but at times there’s miscommunication as we’re a young side.”
