Mr Motivator: Esher try scorer Stewart Maguire

Forwards coach Ricky Nebbett has warned his men to prove they want to be at Molesey Road next season in games against high-flying Doncaster Knights and Rosslyn Park this month, writes Pippa Field.

Esher slumped to a 27-5 defeat at Tynedale on Saturday meaning they have secured only three wins from their past eight games – a disastrous run that has seen them slip to fifth in the National League One table.

A solitary Stewart Maguire try on 43 minutes provided the only highlight for his side against much-improved opposition.

And Nebbett insisted his men had to show they had the stomach for the fight or they would be heading out of the exit door.

“We knew they had been on a run of form and, fair play to them, they played very well on the day,” he said.

“As a team, we are maybe struggling with a bit of motivation. We are quite a way off the teams at the top, but we are relatively safe in the table from the bottom.

“The task for us as coaches is to promote that self motivation and that pride in our performances.

“We are looking forward to the next couple of home games against Doncaster and Rosslyn Park. If we can’t motivate ourselves for those games, when can you?”

While the result was not one to remember for Nebbett, he found a positive in centre Rhys Howells.

“Despite playing out of position on the wing, I thought he was very solid and did not let the side down,” he added.

“We have players with a lot of experience, but despite not having that, he was probably the pick of the bunch.”

Cobham crashed 56-16 at home to London Division One South leaders Gravesend on Saturday. They travel to Brighton this weekend.
