Peter Edwards has more reason than most to look forward to London Welsh’s clash with the Scarlets at the Kassam Stadium on Sunday (kick-off 2pm).

The prop forward lined out for the Scarlets in last year’s corresponding fixture at Parc y Scarlets, helping them to a 23-17 win over the Exiles thanks to a late try from Scott Williams.

On Sunday, however, he’s hoping to turn the tables for London Welsh.

Edwards joined the Exiles from the Scarlets in the summer and made his debut for his new club in last weekend’s comprehensive 107-5 victory against Chinnor.

But Edwards knows better than most that Sunday will be a completely different proposition.

“It’s a massive game for us to see where we’re at and how our preparations have gone,” he said.

“This game will tell a lot about London Welsh, where we’re good and where we need to improve.

“The Scarlets love attacking rugby and they’re developing their all round game, so it’s going to be interesting.

"We’ll have to respect them every time they’ve got the ball, but they’ll have to respect us as well.”

Edwards made 40 appearances for the Scarlets after joining the club in 2010, making his debut against Benetton Treviso in September of that year.

“The Scarelts is a great club and a passionate club, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. They play a great brand of rugby and they’ve very passionate supporters. There are a lot of similarities to London Welsh – they’ve both got great history,” said Edwards.

“There’s no better feeling than playing a Heineken Cup team and one of the most famous clubs in Wales. If you play for the Scarlets then you’re one of the best players in Wales.

“They’re going to be coming to the Kassam with a squad full of boys wanting to impress, especially some of the younger players who did really well with Wales U20s.

“There’s a fair few of those guys in the Scarlets set up and they’re going to be keen to push through into the first team. I think it will be a very good game.”

While Welsh warmed up for Sunday’s clash by running in 17 tries, the Scarlets went down 23-15 to Exeter Chiefs at Parc y Scarlets.

But like London Welsh head coach Justin Burnell, Edwards isn’t getting carried away by the Exiles’ win over Chinnor.

“We went to Chinnor to try and put our attacking game into place and it came off, and to also work hard on our defence. It was tough; even though the scoreline might not suggest that,” he said.

“It was good to be involved on a match-day and it was good for the team to finally play against an opposition.”

Chinnor also saw the gauntlet thrown down by Nathan Trevett to Edwards and the rest of the London Welsh front row union, as the former Cardiff Blues prop showed a blistering turn of pace to go over for a debut try. It’s now up to Edwards and Co to rise to the challenge.

“He’s going to live off that one - he’s got one over the rest of us already. We’re all playing catch up now,” said Edwards.
