Head coach Jeff Parsons says Sutton & Epsom are far from perfect despite recording a sixth straight win.

A 31-27 triumph over Twickenham on Saturday – thanks to tries from Guy Stuckey-Clarke, Andy Matthews, Ryann Bruce, Kyren Ghumra and James Caddy got the tries, as well as six points off Steve Munford’s boot, keeps Sutton fifth in London South Division One.

Parsons said: “We played some excellent rugby in the first half to get 31-10 ahead.

“We totally dominated the game for about an hour, but then we switched off.

“Maybe we thought the game was won, but we should know from past experience that Havant finish strongly and we let them back in.

“We should not be switching off in games.

“We could have made a big statement to the rest of the league, instead even though we have the bonus point win, we’re disappointed with how it finished.”

He added: "This league is so tight we have to be on the ball in every game. We may have won the last six, but for the past three weeks we've not climbed higher than fifth.

"We're in that group which is breaking away and yes, there’s a good vibe around the place, but there are areas for improvement and we are certainly far from the finished article.”

Sutton, who go to Twickenham on November 15, face a weekend off, and it leaves a bittersweet taste in the mouth.

Parsons said: “The lads deserve a break, but we’ve got some momentum going and the weekend break is not welcome from that point of view.

“Twickenham have been losing some games and so they will probably be keen for the break.

“We’ll just have to make sure we continue our momentum in our training sessions, and they have been excellent of late – so I am hopeful it should not be a problem.”

Meanwhile, Parsons says club stalwart Matt Whitaker could be back playing in the next couple of weeks.

The flanker has been waiting on clearance from his doctor after suffering a head injury in October last year.

Parsons said: “Matt has had the verbal all-clear, but we’re not going to play him until we get a letter from his doctor saying he can play.

“We’re hopeful to get that this week because we’re desperate to have him back in the team.”
