Belgrave Harrier Andrius Jaksevicius came close to Surrey Cross Country Championship glory in Dorking on Sunday, but it might have been better, writes Stuart Amos.
The 34-year-old Lithuanian clocked 41 minutes 53 seconds to finish fourth in the men’s race.
He was only one minute and 13 seconds adrift of winner and clubmate Cobham’s Phil Wicks and six seconds outside of the medals – having ran the Bushy Park parkrun 24 hours earlier.
Striding it out: Walton Athletics Club's Fiona de Mauny
Jaksevicius was triumphant in Bushy Park on Saturday as he claimed his second win in the event this year in a time of 16:13.
Going close: Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Neil Wellard
It was unlucky 13 for Kingston & Polytechnic Harrier Neil Wellard in the U20 men’s event.
The 18-year-old clocked 21:38 to finish third, but was only 13 seconds adrift of winner George Gathercole of Aldershot, Farnham & District Athletics Club. Kingston’s Zak Wort (15:06) was sixth in the U15 boys’ race and clubmate Mack Downey (11:15) was eighth in the U13 boys’ event.
Walton Athletics Club’s Charlotte Vaughan (17:08) was sixth in the U15 girls’ race, while Fiona De Mauny (35:15) was 12th in the women’s race.
