Whatever the eventual outcome of this oh-so-intriguing season, Chelsea fans have two new heroes.

If Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa carry on the way they are doing, they are on course to join the Stamford Bridge hall of fame.

Both featured prominently in the unlikeliest of scorelines at Goodison Park last weekend, as Chelsea memorably ran out 3-6 winners.

Nine-goal thrillers of this calibre only come round every few years, but it was the nature of the win that truly impressed.

Cute passing triangles, dazzling teamwork and heavenly finishing were all hallmarks of the Blues’ victory, leaving the club floating on air ahead of the next match… a home tie against high-flying Swansea.

Jose Mourinho, wearing his Cheshire cat grin, jokingly deplored Chelsea’s defending, but after that feast of entertainment, any complaints were light-hearted.

Fabregas is proving himself an ace provider, and Costa an ace scorer, even if he can sometimes be prone to the kind of tantrums usually reserved for the Great British Bake Off.

Now that Fernando Torres has gone on an extended loan deal to Italy, nobody needs maintain the delightful pretence that the striker was ever really a vital weapon in the Blues’ armoury.

Chelsea are reaping the benefits of clinching most of their signings in the early summer, giving newcomers important bedding-in time.

Costa will need to be mindful of the tricky tactics employed by Everton to wind him up – a nudge in the back here, a sly jostle there. It resulted in a booking, but the Toffees’ aim appeared to be to unsettle the Chelsea striker to the point of collecting two yellows.

“Every time we had the ball we were dangerous,” said Mourinho after the match. “The quality of our football was fantastic.”

And so it was. The Blues have assumed the role occupied by Liverpool last season – the team everyone wants to watch for their sheer verve. Happy days.
