Movie Preview Network: Autumn of Cinema

Here’s my pick of what to see this wet and windy weekend.

Wandsworth Times:

Interstellar (12A) In cinemas Friday November 7

Cast: Matthew McConaugheyAnne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Wes Bentley, Topher Grace, John Lithgow, Matt Damon and David Oyelowo

Director: Christopher Nolan

Genre: Sci-Fi / Drama / Adventure

Synopsis:
In the close future a group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage.
Earth has been devastated by severe climate changes and brought on wide spread drought An epic marathon of a movie (make sure you go to the loo before you take your seat) at over two and a half hours long. But then again you can’t go far wrong with Matthew McConaughey at moment. In my opinion he suffered a severe drought himself ever since A Time to Kill (1996) and then made quite a few bad choices including some awfully embarrassing rom –coms up until The Lincoln Lawyer (2011). Since then he seems to be unstoppable following this with Killer Joe (2011) FOF reviewed, Mud (2012), Magic Mike (2012), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), Dallas Buyers Club (2013) for which he won an Academy Award and let’s not forget the successful TV series True Detective (2014).

Interstellar also offers an all-star cast including the multi-talented Anne Hathaway, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, David Oyelowo and the legendary Michael Caine and John Lithgow. Director Christopher Nolan has a pretty impressive track record as well.

Say When… (15) In cinemas Friday November 7

Starring: Chloë Grace MoretzKeira Knightley, Sam Rockwell, Gretchen Mol, Mark Webber, Kaitlyn Dever and Ellie Kemper

Directed by: Lynn Shelton

Genres: Romantic comedy

Wandsworth Times:

Synopsis:
Twenty eight year old Megan Burch (Keira Knightley) goes through an early mid-life crisis. Her old college friends are all getting married and having kids and when her long-time boyfriend Anthony (Mark Webber) makes a clumsy marriage proposal she revaluates her life and career.
One day Megan meets up with a group of teenage girls led by Annika (Chloe Grace Moretz) and they ask Megan to buy them some booze. Megan gets attached to Annika and her sixteen year old friends and Annika invites her for a sleep-over weekend, where Megan meets her single parent Father Craig (Sam Rockwell). Will Megan’s sleep over develop into something more?

Sam Rockwell is one of those actors who you don’t think about that often but always puts in a solid performance. Check out Moon (2009) directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan (Zowie) Jones. A great understated low budget sci-fi movie. Also Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) directed by George Clooney and Star Trek comedy spoof Galaxy Quest (1999).

Trivia: For some reason the US version of Say When was called Laggies.

The Skeleton Twins (15) In cinemas November 7

Starring: Kristen WiigBill Hader, Boyd Holbrook, Ty Burrell, Luke Wilson and Kathleen Rose Perkins

Directed by: Craig Johnson

Genre: Drama (Yes really!)

Wandsworth Times:

Synopsis:
After ten years of estrangement, twins Maggie (Kristen Wiig) and Milo (Bill Hader) coincidentally cheat death on the same day, prompting them to reunite and confront how their lives went so wrong. As the twins' reunion reinvigorates them both, they realize that the key to fixing their lives just may lie in fixing their relationship with each other.
For a film starring two great comedy actors such as Hader and Wiig who both cut their teeth on Saturday Night Live TV and appeared in some classic American comedies. Between them they put in some strong dramatic performances. That goes for Ty Burrell as well.
