The press release for Accidental Love states that the film is a star studded wacky romantic comedy.

However the only thing that rings any truth in the above statement is that is does indeed have a host of talented actors including Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code, Brokeback Mountain, Nightcrawler), Bill Hader, (Superbad, Paul, Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Jessica Biel (Total Recall, The A-Team, Playing for Keeps), Beverly D’Angelo (Entourage TV series, American History X, National Lampoon’s Vacation), Catherine Keener (40-Year Old Virgin, Captain Philips, Begin Again), Kurt Fuller (Wayne’s World, The Good Wife TV).

Wandsworth Times:

With this line up you have to ask why is the film so awful?

Maybe it’s because the film was originally directed by Academy Award nominated director and producer David O. Russell (American Hustle 2013, Silver Linings Playbook 2012) who disowned the project in 2010 “due to difficulties with financing.” So the film was completed without Russell’s involvement and without a director.

The film due for release is credited using the synonym “Stephen Greene”.

Synopsis:
Alice Eckle (Jessica Biel) is a roller-skating waitress at a drive-in Diner. She has a long term boyfriend Scott (James Marsden) who is a motor-cycle Cop in this small Indiana town.

Scott intends to propose to Alice at their favourite restaurant The Gondola.

Wandsworth Times:

Just as Alice accepts his proposal and Scott places the ring on her finger, a workman (who for some reason is still putting finishing touches to the décor in the restaurant while customers are eating)  using a nail gun accidentally fires a nail through Alice’s head lodging close to her brain.

Did I mention this is a comedy?

Alice is rushed to the hospital and just as the chief surgeon (Bill Hader) is about to operate, it is brought to his attention that Alice does not have any health insurance so obviously she is sent away as she cannot afford the surgery. Still laughing?

Wandsworth Times:

Her Fiancé Scott is so appalled by the thought of trying to raise the money that he takes back the ring and puts the engagement on hold. However, there is an upside to the accident as the embedded nail gives Alice occasional nymphomaniac tendencies. Why wouldn’t it?

Alice confronts her parents and her Mother reveals that that stopped her medical insurance to save money and her friends all gather around and decide to try a DIY operation.

Enter her Auntie Rita (Kirstie Alley) who happens to be a vet and tries to perform the operation with a giant pair of tweezers prodding into her head while drunk and high but Alice puts a stop to this madness.

I was laughing at this stage but for the wrong reasons.

While contemplating her fate in her room with good friend the Reverend Norm (Kurt Fuller) who for some reason has a medical condition that has him a permanent state of excitement, if you know what I mean? and his companion Keyshawn (Tracy Morgan that man from 30-rock) see an advert on TV for Congressman Howard  Birdwell (Jake Gyllenhaal) who says that he can help people with problems.

Wandsworth Times:

So the three of them decide to seek out Birdwell in Washington DC as he is sure to help by passing a bill in congress for a national health service. Birdwell turns out to be a bit of a loser but this doesn’t stop Alice from having wild sex with him in an extremely stupid scene with cartwheeling arms and legs.

The plot also involves Birdwell’s nemesis in the form of Congresswoman Pam Hendrickson (Catherine Keeler) who will stop at nothing to sabotage Howard and Alice.

I’m afraid I can’t say anything nice about this film. Probably one of the worst films I have seen for a long time. There were very few laughs from the audience and there was a sort of quiet disbelief as everybody slowly walked out of the screening room.

Honestly, I don’t believe that David O. Russell left the movie for financial reasons. It was more like he just wanted to get as far away from this bad movie as possible.

I can only give the movie one out of five for the cast for deciding to turn up every day and carry on without a director. Just when they thought it was safe to go back in the water…this film hit the cinemas.
