Disabled man died in Battersea fire

The 77-year-old man who died in a fire in his home on Friday was disabled, it has emerged.

About 20 firefighters were called to the blaze in St Rule Street, Battersea, at 12.25pm on Friday, March 2.

Neighbour Robert Buxton, 60, said: "I used to go to shop local with him. He had bad legs, he could not go far. He asked me to go shopping for him."

Jerome Fucan, 30, who lives in the flat underneath said he saw the fire: "There were people shouting outside there is a fire upstairs and there were lots of firefighters."

Firemen brought the fire under control at 1.45pm, but not before it had torn through part of the two storey marionette.

Crews from Clapham, Brixton and Battersea all helped battle the blaze.

The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.

The man has not yet been named.
