I am writing in support of Colin Crilly ('Wandsworth Guardian's adulation of British soldiers is offensive').
He is not denying that individual soldiers show great personal bravery.
He is making the point that they are doing a job they have chosen to do, as a profession and that they are sent to fight wars by our politicians who are often misguided in Mr Crilly's opinion, and in mine.
Many other people show great personal bravery, both as professionals (firefighters) and as volunteers (lifeboat men), and we should honour their contribution to society.
I very much disliked the slogan attached to this year's Poppy Day Appeal: 'Shoulder to shoulder with those who serve'.
Poppy Day was originally an opportunity for solemn remembrance and an occasion upon which we could promise to avoid the tragedy and waste of war in the future.
