I have been calling for police to wear body cameras for years, and therefore naturally welcome the decision for firearms officers to begin trials.

But this doesn’t go far enough.

Not only would this kit provide real benefits for officers carrying out their day to day job, but it could help provide vital evidence and remove doubt in difficult cases such as the Mark Duggan shooting.

It may sound like very futuristic kit, but these wearable cameras are quite cheap and easy to use, and it’s not uncommon to see similar tech in a local electronics shop.

Staffordshire police have been equipping officers with this technology since 2010. They have helped reduce bureaucracy - as officers can avoid writing long statements – and they have reduced complaints against police significantly.

Most of the tension between the police and some of London’s communities comes from day-to-day contact such as stop and search.

Therefore we should pilot body worn cameras on all officers in areas of London where confidence in the police is lower than it should be.

While there may be a short term cost, this will be more than offset by the proven reduction in the cost of complaints.

Reduced costs and improved community relations could help revolutionise policing in London.
