We’ve spoken to many of our residents about the suggestion that local residential roads have their speed limit reduced to 20mph.
Their feedback was supportive so, we worked with our colleagues at Wandsworth town hall to change the Council’s policy to allow the introduction of 20mph schemes to areas where local people support them.
A successful pilot in West Putney, which used painted road markings rather than more speed bumps to alert drivers that they were entering a 20mph zone, had positive results.
We also carried out a petition to see if people in our ward wanted such a scheme for us. Hundreds of residents signed the petition, particularly those with young families.
We’re pleased to say that other political parties and independent campaigners added their voices to call for lower speed limits on our residential roads.
Wandsworth Council’s Strategic Planning and Transportation Committee is therefore set to vote on launching a formal consultation of residents across Bedford ward to see if such a zone should be introduced.
People will be contacted by council officers in the next couple of months.
We urge Bedford ward residents, whatever their views, to take part in the consultation so that we get a result that genuinely reflects local opinion and can make a final decision.
Councillors Antonia Dunn, Alex Jacob, and John Locker, Wandsworth Council (Conservative, Bedford ward)
