So it came to pass that the hoarding and scaffolding has gone up, wrecking crew at work and so with it has gone the very last remnant of the dream I have held since childhood of films ever being shown again at the dear little cinema in Southfields.

Monumental shame. Tragedy even. I could cry.

For a century the building has stood there and now already the roof is all but gone. Buildings of character as such will never be seen again.

Everyone has a vivid memory of the place imprinted in their mind. Ask anyone. Had I the funds I would have bought the place and put some romance back into life.

Imagine being able to walk down and watch Skyfall (other blockbusters are available) in the place rather than the faceless, charmless option.

The grey flannel clad new inhabitants of the area shuffle past from the station with their orange carrier bags on their way home to their ready meal and mortgage and nobody cares.

Nobody cares: Local M.P. gets a photo opportunity and a bit of PR; avaricious Gresham Pensions get their development; and all is well with the world.

Dear Nick Cuff and cronies on the Wandsworth Council Planning Committee: hang your head in shame.

I hope at least some people will not forget.

Mark Johnson; Poterne Close, Southfields
