All this talk about rat-runs and congestion in Wandsworth leads me to believe that we are all missing the point about motor traffic in our borough.

The fact is, if we made our streets safer and more welcoming to pedestrians and cyclists, then more people would ditch their cars, particularly for shorter journeys like the school run.

In the Netherlands, it has become normal for parents to take their children to school on bikes, but this was only as a result of taking the radical measure in the 1970s of making life easier by bike, and putting people ahead of machines.

For those who think that cyclists don't pay for the roads, look at it the other way; with a recent study suggesting that the NHS would save £250m a year if as little as one in 10 journeys were made by bicycle, can we really afford not to invest in greener, healthier routes?
