A couple of your readers seem to believe the prime purpose of public spaces is for the storage and operation of motor vehicles.

But motor ownership is a minority activity in London, and one which hugely negatively impacts on everyone elses' quality of life.

Pollution, noise, death and destruction.

We need to find a more healthy balance, so that our public spaces are pleasant and safe places for us all to use - and that means challenging the aggressive and vocal motoring lobby.

Residential streets shouldn't be busy thoroughfares.

If you want to get through to the next road, then walk; you might actually meet your neighbours.

There are plenty of alternatives to driving! If you find yourself stuck in traffic on Upper Tooting Road, then maybe you and your vehicle are part of the problem.

Could you get the tube, a bus, on a bicycle instead?

And help provide a more pleasant living environment for the children who have no choice but to live on Fishponds Road.
