The University of Roehampton relies on publications like the Wandsworth Guardian to talk and listen to our neighbours in Roehampton and across the wider borough.
This week’s Local Newspaper Week provides the perfect chance to give credit for a job well done.
Local news coverage is important to the university, not only to explain what we do, but also to educate our students about the world around them, creating responsible, confident, citizens who have the opportunity to engage with issues of importance to society.
Many are from Wandsworth families and trust their local newspaper for unbiased factual journalism.
In the past we have successfully used newspapers to promote our courses – everything from world renowned dance programmes, to business, history and zoology.
Our journalism students often carry out work experience placements with the local press and have gone on in many cases to take up jobs in the industry.
We run many events open to Wandsworth residents and we are grateful to you for promoting them, and we hope this will continue in the future.
This engagement between ‘town and gown’ is beneficial to both parties.
Experts say websites are the future; we fully support that.
However, the university has faith in printed newspapers being important for the here and now.
