I was horrified to find electric cigarettes for sale on a stand at the level of my toddler in a buggy at a WHSmith store in Clapham Junction train station yesterday.

That the highly addictive drug nicotine is being marketed and sold at the eye level of a small child (in or out of a buggy) and within their hand's reach is shocking and unnecessary.

I intend to campaign for the removal of these stands for the future health of the children of today - the electric cigarette brand is clearly exploiting the impressionability of small children hoping that with repeated exposure of the brand they will grow up familiar with it and subsequently more likely to use the harmful substance that they make a profit from.

Furthermore I am shocked that WHSmith should be assisting in this process - not what I expect from such an established institution.

While legislation against the marketing and advertising of electric cigarettes may be lagging behind its proliferation, I do not expect to see WHSmith taking advantage of this delay to make money from promoting nicotine in prime positions in their stores.

I hope that the Wandsworth Guardian and its readers will put public pressure on WHSmith and E-cigarette companies to stop influencing children in the promotion of harmful substances.
