Wandsworth Council has once again proved, by cutting funding to the blind and disabled, how savage they are when it comes to pushing through these unnecessary austerity measures and, by extension, destroying what remains of our public services and welfare state.

Plans to close the Battersea Sports Centre as part of their gentrification programme is another recent example. When you hear that the council is making “savings” this simply mean cuts that affect us.

Rather than challenging these misguided Government-driven policies, and standing up for us, the people of Wandsworth, our local elected representatives just keep enforcing them, managing the population into quiet obedience, and looking after their cosy jobs in the process.

They continue to say “yes” to their pay masters, and safeguard their own healthy salaries. It is said that you can tell a lot by how a society looks after its poor and needy.

Well in that case, Wandsworth Council is an appalling example.

It is its, and the Government’s ideology that there should not be a safety net – that the less well off should not be cared for by us all.

That looking out for others is a sign of weakness.

That we should privatise or outsource everything, and therefore have to pay for everything.

That people should not get anything for free because we do not deserve it.

It is happening before our eyes a piece at a time, and it is up to your readers to say “enough is enough”.
