In Battersea library, Wandsworth Council has put up two notices near one another.
The one by the machine that sells food and drink reads, “for pleasant computing do not eat or drink at the public machines”.
This means that you need no permission to eat or drink in the library and may do so anywhere except at a computer.
The second notice reads, “No person shall, except with the consent of a library officer, partake of refreshment in the library”.
This means that you may not eat or drink in the library unless you have first obtained permission.
I have asked the council and been told that both of the signs are correct. No doubt the great minds of our councillors do not find this confusing, but I some of the public may.
