A sixth former at Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth Church of England School in Southfields has been offered a place to study at the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. Quinn Oulton, 18, who was initially inspired by the great American jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, fought off tough competition to win a coveted place at the world renowned Academy. A music scholar at Saint Cecilia’s, Wandsworth, Quinn begged his parents for a saxophone for his eight birthday and has played ever since.

As well as being an amazing saxophonist, Quinn, who sits his A-levels in the summer, is also a talented drummer, guitarist and composer, producing pieces from trad jazz to club dance. He has attended the Grammy Camp in LA and has had the opportunity to perform in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall. “Saint Cecilia’s has given me many opportunities to experience a vast variety of music, from Gamelan to Opera. The staff have been nothing but supportive throughout my musical development,” he says.

As for the future, Quinn is not entirely sure what he would like to do but he is certain that music will be an important part of his life. He is especially grateful to John Wells and James Robinson, music teachers at Saint Cecilia’s, Sahana Gero, Director at World Heart Beat Academy, and saxophonist Patrick Clahar. They all have had a great influence and helped Quinn secure this offer at Britain’s oldest music academy.
