A popular Epsom pub re-opened its doors last week after an extensive refurbishment.

The Marquis of Granby in West Street reopened with a wide range of new food, wine and beer on Friday, May 12 – nearly a month after it closed for renovation.

Manager Fiona Rynn explained the pub’s repainted red, green and gold colour scheme reflected the military commander Marquis of Granby’s uniform,

Garden furniture has been added to the front of the pub, and that if anything the pub now looked “more traditional”, Ms Rynn added.

She said: “It’s lovely to have reopened.

“We’ve had very positive feedback from the customers so far.

“A lot of our regulars were hoping we wouldn’t modernise too much, but if anything it’s now more traditional.”

The pub will be celebrating its relaunch with complimentary drinks and canapes at a launch party on Thursday, May 18.

The Marquis of Granby – like many across the country – is named for the marquis who commanded British infantry battalions at the Battle of Minden in 1759 during the Seven Years War fought between most of the major European powers of the mid-eighteenth century. Many soldiers set up as landlords after they left the army and named their pubs after their commander.
