Kirsten Dunst and Chloe Sevigny have revealed they would collaborate with controversial director Lars von Trier again.
The Danish filmmaker, whose films include Nymphomaniac and Antichrist, has admitted to being under the influence of alcohol and drugs for most of his career. As he undergoes treatment for substance addiction, he has admitted to having worries about making bad films while being sober.
Kirsten, who worked with Lars on Melancholia, told the Hollywood Reporter: “For the right role, I would definitely work with him.”
Chloe, who collaborated with the director in Dogville, added: “He’s a provocateur, a comedian. People always take his work too seriously.”
The 40-year-old actress also defended the filmmaker’s claims about being drunk on set, saying: “I don’t remember him ever being drunk. He may have had a couple of Schnapps at lunch, but he was very proficient as a filmmaker.”
As well as tackling difficult themes and topics in his films, Lars caused controversy when he expressed empathy for Adolf Hitler at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival.
The 58-year-old director told Danish newspaper Politiken, cited by the Guardian: “I don’t know if I can make any more films, and that worries me.
“There is no creative expression of artistic value that has ever been produced by ex-drunkards and ex-drug addicts. Who the hell would bother with a Rolling Stones without booze or with a Jimi Hendrix without heroin?” he added.
