Matt Smith does not think there is a problem with “great female roles” in the film industry.
The former Doctor Who actor, who stars in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, thinks that the parts available for women are already impressive.
He said: “I sort of don’t buy into this idea that there aren’t great female roles out there. I think they’re everywhere if you look in cinemas nowadays.
“I mean you only need to glance at the Oscars to see there are some wonderful performances by young women and young women being nominated, so I think they are out there.”
Only around half of all films pass the Bechdel test, which requires a movie to feature at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man.
Matt admitted there may have been a problem in the past.
But with the Austen adaptation – which combines the 1813 novel with an alternative reality where zombies roam the countryside – there is no problem with the female roles, he said.
“I think if it encourages the idea of young women being the sword-wielding action heroes then I think that’s really cool,” Matt explained.
Former Downton Abbey actress Lily James, who plays Elizabeth Bennet, said: “It was fun and empowering to be part of this girl group that were the ones sort of in control of the fighting and so strong.
“And those girls from Jane Austen – you know, Liz and Jane in particular – are so strong and such strong young women. It was really cool.”
Bella Heathcote, who plays her on-screen sister, added: “Look, I did this film and I love being a strong female, I love being able to kick arse surrounded by other girls doing that.
“I’d love to keep on doing that film where I get to be like an action hero again.”
