Mr Walsh’s letter of May 21 misconstrues my position, and that of the local Liberal Democrats.
We are campaigning for the council to take a more proactive approach to road danger reduction than it currently takes.
Pedestrian casualty rates across Wandsworth are significantly higher than the national average, 76 per cent higher in Battersea, 55 per cent in Putney and 44 per cent in Tooting.
Most pedestrians who have been hurt to be included in these statistics have been involved in collisions on our roads with drivers of cars, buses, vans and lorries. People cycling on our pavements is a symptom of how dangerous many people feel our streets are. Improve the safety of our streets so people are not scared of cycling on them, and we will have fewer people cycling on our pavements.
