Wandsworth’s only jazz club could be about to face the music.

The owner of Le Quecumbar, in Battersea High Street, said the venue has been hit with a 50 per cent increase in rent by landlords Enterprise Inns, which could potentially spell the final curtain for the popular live music venue.

For more than a decade the club has been showcasing the music of 1930s Gypsy jazz maestro Django Reinhardt and is a hotspot for live music.

Le Q has hosted 4,500 live music events in its 12 years including Hank Marvin, a patron who regularly plays at the club when visiting from Australia.

Other notable patrons include Grammy award winning musician John Jorgenson and guitarist and recording artist Tommy Emmanuel.

Le Q has also graced the screen featuring in BBC2 drama The Honourable Woman last year as well as acting as the backdrop for The Gipsy Kings’ last album.

A Kickstarter campaign has been started to raise £35,000 and secure the venue’s future by the end of the month.

Customer David Kaplan said: “There is simply nothing like it anywhere in London. It is the one and only home for Gypsy music and the variety of strands associated with it.

"From India to the Balkans, from Romani to Ladino, from violins to accordions, from klezmer to swing, Le Q is home to them all and it would be a crying shame to lose it.”

Another regular, Peter Golding, said: “Musicians and enthusiasts come from near and far to this magical cafe and bar for its heartfelt music and amazing atmosphere which is always welcoming and friendly.”

The campaign has so far collected close to £8,000.

Manager Steve Tennison, who started the Kickstarter campaign, said: “The increase in rent is a blow to a small independent music venue that only just manages to keep its head above the parapet.

“The increase places an enormous pressure upon us to get new people through the door, as well as returning customers.

“This Kickstarter crowd-funding opportunity will see us hopefully gain new support and strengthen existing support with some exciting opportunities.

"As well as other material upgrades, improving the look and feel of Le Que, the successful crowd-funding will see a festival celebrating the music of top Gypsy swing artists being organised in London in 2016.

"Keeping the club open is obviously priority number one."
