Gas mains replacement project will cause two months of disruption in St Margarets Road

National Grid will provide an essential gas mains replacement to ensure safe connection to reliable gas supplies from Monday, January 18.

The eight week scheme involves replacing ageing iron gas mains with longer-lasting pipes which will last for decades.

Phil Walden, authorising engineer at National Grid, said: “This is a major project but we’re doing all we can to deliver it with as little disruption as possible.

He added: “During peak travel times we will manually control the traffic lights to reduce congestion and we’ll also work at weekends when necessary to ensure we finish the job on time.”

The work will be carried out in two stages, the first between The Barons and the roundabout at the A316 and the second at the opposite side of the roundabout up to the junction with Netherton Road.

Councillor for St Margarets Alex Ehmann said he hoped the works were absolutely necessary and would cause minimal disruption to traders in the village.

He said: "I hope the council will work closely with the gas suppliers to ensure there is minimal disruption.

"My main concern is the impact the works will have on traders in St Margarets Village."

Four bus stops will be suspended as well as parking in St Margarets Road.
