Nursery manager Zuzanna Czochralska-Szczygiel said: "We wanted to give the children the opportunity to support their interest in literacy."

Freya Blakemore, three, brought in her favourite book What The Ladybird Heard.

She said: "I love all the different animals in the story, and the rhymes. The best bit is when the baddies fall in the duck pond."

Special guest and local author Clare Luther gave a reading of her recently published series The Savanna Set.

She said: "The books encourage support, and teach the children about being happy just the way you are, the importance of friendship and treating people just as you would like to be treated; all great lessons for the little ones."

Designed by UNESCO, World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading.

In its 19th year running, World Book Day aims to encourage a love of literature among the young.
