A junior doctor and Wandsworth councillor has become odds-on favourite to replace Sadiq Khan as Tooting MP within hours of being shortlisted by the Labour Party.

Mr Khan stood down as MP on May 9 after becoming Mayor of London on May 7. He had pledged to be a "full-time mayor" from the beginning of his campaign.

The Labour Party asked interested candidates to apply by Tuesday at 10am, and the National Executive Council interviewed everyone on Wednesday.

The shortlist includes Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Martin Smith, Naushabah Khan, Mike McLoughlin and Jasvir Singh.

Ladbrokes has odds of 1/4 for Labour to retain the seat, and Dr Allin-Khan at 10/11 to win the party selection on Saturday, May 14.

Dr Allin-Khan is one of the deputy leaders of the Labour group on Wandsworth Council and is a junior doctor in the emergency department at St George's Hospital.

She has lent her support to the strike action, often working as emergency cover is provided during those periods.

Martin Smith is a national officer for the GMB union.

He grew up in Manchester and moved to London to find work. His background is in job centres, working to develop programmes for employment skills.

His odds are 4/1 according to Ladbrokes.

Naushabah Khan is a Labour councillor for Gillingham South in Medway Council.

She was the Labour candidate in the Rochester and Strood by-election and the 2015 General Election, coming third both times.

Mike McLoughlin is another junior doctor on the list. He lives in Tooting according to the New Statesman, and works in St Thomas hospital.

He moved to London from Northern Ireland to practice medicine.

He would take the number of openly gay MPs in the Commons to 35.

Jasvir Singh is a family barrister who calls himself a "Londoner born and bred" and says he has lived in South London for 10 years.

His place of worship is in Upper Tooting Road.

He said he went into family law after seeing his aunt go through a difficult divorce when he was eight.
