A sergeant from Battersea has raised more than £600 for charity in his third RideLondon event.

Sgt Nathan Shickle, based at Lavender Hill police station, completed the RideLondon 100 on Sunday, July 31, to raise money for Tommy's, a charity funding research into premature birth.

The officer completed the race in under five hours of riding time.

Sgt Shickle, 41, said: "My third RideLondon and my third event raising money for Tommy's, a Charity that funds research into stillbirth, miscarriage and premature birth.

"This is a charity close to my heart as my wife and I had to endure the grief of three miscarriages between the birth of our two boys."

Sgt Shickle joined the early wave of riders, finding himself on the start line at 6.20am on Sunday morning to take on the 100 mile journey through central London, south west London and Surrey.

He said: "I'm one of those cyclists who takes their training fairly seriously and I have a computer and a whole suite of sensors, a heart rate monitor, a cadence sensor, and speed sensor, to provide me with data whilst in the saddle. In the first few miles I had to keep telling myself to ease off the gas a little as my heart rate was going way too high."

Sgt Shickle joined thousands of riders on the route through Richmond Park, Kingston, where he was cheered on by supporters from Tommy's charity, before getting to Surrey where the steep inclines of Leith Hill and Box Hill awaited him.

The route then snakes back to London, a regular sight for Sgt Shickle, and he was spurred on by Micheal Davis, a fellow cyclist from Southfields, as he got to the home stretch of Wimbledon Hill, 91 miles behind him with nine to go.

He said: "Through Putney, across the bridge and onto Kings Road, a familiar commuting route for me, now being ridden much quicker, as I shared the effort with two other riders, one of whom was wearing the colours of Twickenham Cycling Club, as we made it along the Embankment, past Parliament Square and onto Whitehall, again, spurred on by the masses of crowds who had turned out to cheer us on.

"The finish line was crossed in a time of four hours 51 minutes with more than £600 raised for Tommy's. A very successful day out."
