Half of Tooting Market could be demolished if Crossrail 2 is routed through Tooting Broadway.

Since October, Transport for London (TfL) has had Balham as its preferred option, stating that ground conditions at Tooting make the project too expensive and likely to take longer than the same station at Balham.

Wandsworth Times: Rosena Allin-Khan, Labour's newly selected candidate for the Tooting by-election, at Memon Centre in Balham, London.

Rosena Allin-Khan, MP for Tooting

Rosena Allin-Khan, MP for Tooting, met with head of Crossrail 2 Michelle Dix on July 26 to understand the implications of a station in Tooting Broadway.

Dr Allin-Khan said: "I recently met with the Head of Crossrail 2 and put forward the case for Tooting Broadway. Crossrail 2 will bring multiple benefits including more affordable homes, many new jobs and the regeneration Tooting needs.

"I've met with residents from the Save Our Balham group - they want Crossrail 2 to come to Tooting Broadway. I've met with local Tooting residents and businesses - they want Crossrail 2 to come to Tooting Broadway. Now we must push to make this happen.

"I want the Mayor of London and the Crossrail 2 team to look again at the plans for Tooting Broadway. Tooting Market is a wonderful community asset - we can’t afford to lose it."

A spokesman for Dr Allin-Khan said the progress of the Tooting Broadway option was moving far quicker than the Balham option, and it was looking more likely that the original choice would be back on the table.

Ms Dix, TfL's Managing Director for Crossrail 2, said: "It is essential that Crossrail 2 provides an interchange with the Northern line to relieve congestion on one of the busiest parts of the Tube network. We are carefully considering the likely benefits and disadvantages of stations at Balham or Tooting Broadway, reflecting on our technical work and the results of the public consultation.

"We are committed to listening to the local community as we develop our proposals with no final decision yet being made."

The manager of Tooting Market, Roi Mengelgrein, has been contacted for a comment.
