Local volunteers were recognised for their outstanding contribution to the community at the Balham and Tooting Community Awards last week.

Councillors such as Dr Rosena Allin-Khna MP for Tooting and the Mayor of Wandsworth Richard Field attended the event (November 24) to present awards along with special guest Lord Bird of Notting Hill, the founder of the Big Issue.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan tweeted that she was “honoured” to speak at the awards which reward “the incredible organisations who do great work in our community”.

Their work includes support for young people at risk in the Somali community, championing BME women’s rights and LGBT rights, helping children behind in reading, relief work for Nepal earthquake victims, helping disabled children in Pakistan, supporting deaf women facing domestic violence, and work benefitting parents of sick children in St George’s Hospital.

Team awards went to Tooting Park Rangers football coaches, Little Village, which helps families in need, the Iman Hussein Blood Donation Campaign team and the Wandsworth Salvation Army.

A special award was given to the Renal Team at St George’s Hospital.

This was the fifth year the BATCA Community Awards since the Balham and Tooting Community Association was established in 2006 to help all Balham and Tooting’s communities to come together and build trust and friendship.
