A Morden school has cause for celebration following an eye-popping Ofsted inspection.

Just five years ago, the Bishopsford Arts College, then rated inadequate, joined the Harris Federations.

Since the creation of Harris Academy Morden it has gone from strength to strength. First it improved to 'Good' in 2015 and this year continued the good work with an 'Outstanding' rating.

Principal of the school, Lee Mallin was delighted that their hard work had paid off.

“Inspectors were extremely impressed by the behaviour of students, observing how well they work with teachers to create outstanding classroom environments," he said.

"Teaching was observed in all subjects and inspectors were blown away by the high quality teaching and learning taking place in every lesson.

“The students of Morden deserve the very best education and that is what is delivered day-to-day at this academy to ensure they leave here prepared for their fantastic futures.”

Among the reasons inspectors ticked the 'Outstanding' box in every category included the "wide extra-curricular programme" which includes cheerleading and visits to the theatre, but also the way teachers support each and every student.

"Leaders use additional funding for disadvantaged pupils and for those in year 7 who need extra help to catch up with others very effectively," the report read.

"The impact of this funding is shown in the outstanding outcomes achieved by disadvantaged pupils.

"Year 7 pupils who join the school with low starting points are supported in reading, for example through the ‘book buddy’ breakfast sessions.

"As a result, they make strong progress in developing their literacy skills."

Inspectors also noted that students at the school are "attentive and keen to learn."

Sir Dan Moynihan, chief executive of the Harris Federation said it was wonderful how far the school has come.

“When you visit the school today, it is hard to believe that just a few years ago it replaced a school in Ofsted’s Special Measures category," he said.

"Leaders and staff there have transformed the opportunities on offer for students and it is excellent to have this recognised by Ofsted.”
