A Surrey Heath county councillor has urged residents to sign his petition calling “for fairer funding for Surrey’s roads,” as the November 2 deadline approaches.

The petition, which has 7,748 signatures, calls on the government to recalculate the grant for road upkeep and repair, which he said disadvantages Surrey.

The conservative councillor said his intention was to keep the petition “non-political”.

He added: “I am a recent county councillor in Surrey Heath and all through the winter we were getting some complaints from people regularly about potholes.

“I looked into the way the funding was put together for road repairs.

“It’s based on the amount of miles in an area rather than the amount of traffic. Surrey has such a high proportion of traffic, and this does not include motorways. “

However, the petition still needs to gather 2,252 signature in the next two weeks in order to receive a response from government.

The councillor said : “It has not taken off the way I’d hoped. Some people have liked it thinking it’s enough but the petition closes soon.”
