A charity has offered £2,000 to replace stolen tools which were being used to help a family in Chislehurst.

Billy Byrne, from the BBC's DIY SOS Big Build, had his tools snatched from his van which was left damaged on Wednesday (October 17).

The heroic building team are in Chislehurst after hearing about two-year-old Arlo who was born with a rare lung disease and is the only child in the UK to suffer the genetic mutation.

After reading the story in News Shopper, the West Kent Freemasons has offered £2,000 to replace the vital goods.

Mark Estaugh, the provincial grand master of the charity, said: “The West Kent Freemasons were all appalled to hear about the tools stolen from Billy’s van in Chislehurst.

“We would therefore like to offer a donation of £2,000 towards the purchase of new tools – to allow Billy and the DIY SOS Team to continue their excellent work.

“Our aim is to continue to forge stronger links with our local communities and provide practical help to good causes within our province.”

After the theft, presenter of the BBC show Nick Knowles said: “Upset site in Chislehurst. Our Billy’s had his van broken into and he’s lost all his tools, damage to the van, so many good people here gutted.”

Little Arlo has lived in Kings College Hospital since birth and needs 24/7 oxygen.

However, the DIY SOS team want to bring him home by building an extension and redesigning the family's ground floor to adapt to the boy's needs.

The Bromley community started an online fundraiser after the news of the stolen tools broke.

BBC's SOS crew started work on October 16 and are due to finish by October 25.

The West Kent Freemasons wrote to the DIY SOS programme earlier today to offer the donation.
