A 21-year-old man alleged to have driven at an estimated 80mph through Abergele after drinking eight cans of cider and a bottle of wine has been jailed for 30 weeks.

He admitted aggravated taking of his mother’s Nissan XTrail which crashed into a shop front, dangerous and drink driving.

Sean Eryl Hughes, of Withnell Road, Blackpool, was told by Judge Rhys Rowlands at Mold crown court: "These offences are very serious. There’s a real potential risk here to other road users.”

The judge said he had driven about ten miles while impaired through drink and had no licence. Hughes had lost control and hit the front of the shop. Later he failed to stop for police.

A three-year ban with an extended re-test was imposed. Judge Rowlands said: "By sheer good fortune no-one was actually hurt. There’s a suggestion of low mod on your part. You do have a number of difficulties.”

But the judge added: "These offences are simply too serious to be dealt with by anything other than an immediate custodial sentence.”

Prosecuting counsel Matthew Curtis said Hughes took his mother’s car without permission at Llysfaen and was seen driving early on October 28. Damage had been caused at Girls World store at Abergele. “It must have hit the front of the shop at some speed,” said Mr Curtis.

Police searched for the car and later saw the damaged Nissan but it failed to stop for them, travelling fast.

When they eventually came across Hughes he remarked: "My head was a bit twisted so I decided to go out.”

His breath-alcohol count was 40, the legal limit being 35, but a few hours had passed since the vehicle was first seen.

Defence barrister Simon Killeen said Hughes was at times too difficult for his mother to cope with and clearly “vulnerable”.
