A promising footballer appeared in court after a brutal attack during which a woman was punched repeatedly in the head outside a club on Clapham High Street.

Andrew Akingbaje, 23, of Brixton, was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm over the New Year's Day attack outside Lotus Nightclub.

He was also charged with two counts of assault by beating against two other women, alleged to have taken place during the same incident.

Akingbaje, who wore a grey tracksuit at Camberwell Magistrates' Court, pleaded not guilty to all offences and was released on conditional bail until January 31.

He must live at the address he gave the magistrates, with an 8pm to 6am curfew.

According to UK Football Trials, Akingbaje, who plays left or right wing, was released from Tottenham Hotspur at a young age due to "poor attitude".

At 21 he signed for league one side Accrington Stanley, following a stint at Peckham Town and received interest from Charlton Athletic. However, there is no record of Akingbaje on Accrington Stanley's website.
