Plans have been submitted to build a huge 132-bed hotel on the site of a derelict Worcester Park pub just seven days after a destructive fire.

The Worcester Park Tavern, in Park Terrace, was “destroyed” when it caught fire in the morning of February 4.

Firefighters tackled the blaze for several hours but couldn’t establish the cause of it because the damage was so bad, concluding it as “unknown”.

But major proposals for a new five, six-storey, 132-bed Ibis Red hotel were submitted to Kingston Council on February 11 – exactly a week after the fire.

The design and access statement reads: “It is anticipated that an Ibis hotel in this location will be extremely popular with business travellers in the midweek period.

“They are likely to be visiting the many businesses located in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and the neighbouring boroughs. These are likely to be price-sensitive travellers who require good, comfortable facilities at an affordable price.

“At the weekends, the hotel is likely to be popular with tourists visiting this part of London or young people visiting Chessington World of Adventures and seeking a cheaper accommodation model, or indeed those seeking to visit central London whilst avoiding central London hotel costs.

“The hotel should also be popular with people visiting friends and relatives locally, or making short visits associated with local universities.

“Again, the excellent local public transport links mean that many of these guests will forego travelling in their own cars.”

Splendid Hospitality Group, which owns the Worcester Park Tavern, says it has been in discussions with Kingston Council over proposed planning developments for several years.

The Ibis Red hotel would be “economy standardised”, meaning almost all the rooms are the same size, and come with a bar or restaurant as well as 24-hour guest services.

Developers are also promising to deliver a “reconfiguration” of Park Terrace if they are granted planning permission by the council.

Splendid Hospitality Group would operate it under a franchise agreement with French hospitality giant Accor Hotels, which runs 4,700 hotels internationally across 95 countries.

It comes as the owners of the Worcester Park Tavern were left “devastated” by the fire which severely damaged their pub earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for Splendid Hospitality Group said: “Representatives of Splendid Hospitality rushed to site as firefighters worked expeditiously to put the fire out.

“Senior board members were kept appraised of the situation from when the fire was reported and is attending site.

“The building has now been secured, and thankfully there were no fatalities nor injuries.”

It remains unclear at this stage when a decision will be made by the council on the proposed plans.
