A campaign to help relieve traffic woes on a busy road in Northumberland Heath has been won after the council agreed to take action.

Residents living near Bexley Road have complained for months about traffic congestion in the mornings due to a bus stop being situated directly across from a Tesco Express which often takes in deliveries during peak travel times.

Deliveries to the store tend to run alongside busses serving the street, leaving morning traffic stuck in the street without being able to pass, leading to delays.

However, a proposal which seeks to move the bus stop further down the street to help alleviate delays during peak morning times has been approved by the Bexley Council's cabinet member for places, Cllr Peter Craske.

This will see the bus stop moved beyond the zebra crossing in the street, while the loading bay used by the supermarket will be moved slightly south.

The approved plan will also see peak-hour loading restrictions put in place along the route to prevent further deliveries from taking place during busy periods.

Speaking on the approval, Cllr Wendy Perfect, who worked closely with residents in the area to help identify the problem and come up with a viable solution, said that although this isn't the "ideal solution", the proposal is an adequate compromise for all involved.

"There was no ideal solution to this issue and I think this was the best compromise available.

"I would like to thank everyone who contributed in some way in trying to resolve this issue", she said.

A letter is to be circulated by the council to affected residents to inform them of the decision taken.
