A shockingly low number of sexual assaults reported to have happened in and around Merton train stations have resulted in anyone being charged.

A Freedom of Information request by the Wimbledon Times revealed that since 2016, 35 sexual assaults - including one rape - have been reported to British Transport Police, yet only two of those incidents ever saw a person charged.

BTP Chief Inspector Mark Lawrie said they are constantly on the lookout for any illegal activity taking place.

“Crime at stations and on board trains in Merton remains very low, with less than five crimes for every million passengers," he said.

“Uniformed officers regularly patrol stations and trains throughout Merton and are ready to respond 24/7.

"We also use the wealth of CCTV on trains and at stations to investigate offences – if you commit a crime on our patch it is highly likely you will be caught on camera."

In total, 460 crimes - ranging from voyeurism to racially aggravated assault - have been reported since 2016 up until February 8, with the most prevalent being acts of common assault (where a person is not injured) with 145.

Of those 460, just 44 have resulted in someone being cautioned, charged or summonsed, with three concluding in a community resolution.

“As seen in these statistics, a large portion of the incidents reported to us in Merton are common assaults, where a victim does not receive an injury," Mr Lawrie added.

“Reporting crimes as soon as they happen helps our investigations, and we will use every reasonable step to bring suspects before the courts and get justice for victims.

“Unfortunately, there are cases where a suspect is not identified regardless of the efforts taken, however our investigators will always work tirelessly to identify offenders and bring them before the courts.

“It is important to remember that passengers are the eyes and ears of the rail network and we continue to encourage them to report concerns to us. You can do this by discreetly texting BTP on 61016.”

During the three-plus years, the train company where the most crimes have reportedly taken place was South Western Railway with 182, with the Northern Line the only other to crack the 100 mark, with a total of 123.
